It sits under the fitted sheet and over the mattress, so nothing reaches the foam — spills, muddy paws, an older dog who needs it. It is the one thing in the photographs that does not come with the bed.

The foam core itself should never go in a washing machine. This is what stops the question arising.

Care

Looking after the protector

Heat is what damages a waterproof backing, so this one stays away from it.

Wash warm, gentle cycle

Hang to dry
Don’t tumble dry and don’t iron — heat damages the waterproof backing.
Spot-clean the foam, never soak it
If something does get through, a damp cloth and mild detergent, then let it dry fully before remaking the bed.
